EGL Energía Iberia brings electricity to a school farm in Cameroon

Madrid,  Friday, June 17, 2011

EGL Energía Iberia has signed an agreement with the Foundation "Energía sin Fronteras" (Energy without Boundaries) for the development of a project for electrification of a school farm in Cameroon through renewable sources.

The project will be carried out in a region of north Cameroon in the city of Kumbo together with a local partner (the NGO Shumas), working to improve the living conditions in rural environments, especially for women. The school farm is located in a desolate region without electricity, and there are no projects planned to bring electricity there in the future.

The project will be carried out in two steps: The first step involves the building of a small 7-kW hydropower plant and a solar plant to provide two clinics (one for animals and one for people) with electricity. The second step is the installation of a wind turbine.

The project will benefit 3,800 people directly and 2,000 indirectly. It will eliminate practical restrictions for the farm due to lack of electricity and will improve operative capacity, as well as teaching quality. Since the technical skills of the people will improve, they will have more resources and more life quality.

EGL Energía Iberia is working continuosly to be a leader in the Spanish and Portuguese energy sector, where it has a great deal of experience as a handling agent for electricity, gas and biomass.
