EGL was quick to identify the economic potential of natural gas as a resource in addition to its power business and had already developed a corresponding business strategy as early as 2003. Since then, the company has been operating successfully in the growing natural gas market, in the liberalised markets of Western Europe as well as in the emerging markets in Southeastern Europe.
EGL concentrates its natural gas operations on midstream business, which encompasses procurement, import, transport and storage, and trading as well as sales to wholesale customers. The natural gas, mostly sourced directly from producers, is used by EGL to supply its procurement portfolio for short-term trading or long-term supplies to customers. In the future the gas transported by TAP will also supply the gas-fired combined-cycle power plants in Italy. EGL's natural gas business is thus vertically integrated into the company's overall operations and extends EGL's value creation chain.
