EGL – via its EGL Grid AG subsidiary – owns a 380/220-kV extra-high-voltage grid extending over a large part of Switzerland. Cross-border transmission lines facilitate contact with all neighbouring countries. This network is operated by the national grid operator Swissgrid as part of the transitional arrangements for liberalisation of the Swiss energy market. Under legislation already in place, the ownership of this infrastructure will be transferred to Swissgrid by the end of 2012.
EGL also has interests in distribution networks in Switzerland, mostly at locations where the company holds stakes in power plants.
